Sarcoidosis is a condition that causes the formation of small lumps, or granulomas, in different parts of the body. Most often, these granulomas form in the lungs, but they can also develop in the lymph nodes, liver, skin, and eyes. Sarcoidosis can affect people of any age, but it is most commonly diagnosed in adults between the ages of 20 and 40.
Although the exact cause of sarcoidosis is unknown, it is believed to be related to the body's immune system. In most cases, sarcoidosis is a chronic condition that can be managed with medication. However, in rare cases, the condition can lead to serious complications. If you think you may have sarcoidosis, it is important to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.
The most common symptoms of sarcoidosis include:
- Fatigue
- Weight loss
- Loss of appetite
- Night sweats
- Coughing
- Chest pain
- Difficulty swallowing
In some cases, the disease can cause inflammation of the eyes, skin rashes, and arthritis. If left untreated, sarcoidosis can lead to serious complications, such as lung scarring and heart problems. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to preventing these complications.
Nearly 50% of patients with sarcoidosis are asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis. Incidentally, the disease is often discovered on a routine chest X-ray done during an annual physical exam or through CT scans in some other circumstance.
