Conferences
There are several formal conferences that are held on a monthly or weekly basis as part of the Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism training program. These conferences have various formats and include the range below.
Advances in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism
In the beginning of the year, this time is used for our “Summer Survival Skills” lectures, which are intended to provide exposure to key areas of diabetes and Endocrinology early in fellowship. This will include presentations on the management of type 1 diabetes, hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer, osteoporosis, and inpatient diabetes. Trainings on insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors (CGM) by our certified diabetes educators, as well as instruction on interpretation of pump +/- CGM downloads and dosing adjustments, will also be given during this time.
For the remainder of the year, these lectures will cover various topics and include speakers from our division as well as guest presenters from other specialties within and outside Upstate Medical University. Also featured during this time are presentations by our basic science faculty, faculty led Journal Clubs, and quarterly updates from our onsite pharmacist.
Board Review Conference
These teaching sessions with the fellows and a faculty member cover all the required clinical topics in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism (listed in the curriculum) over the course of the year and assists in preparation for the Endocrinology Boards. Each session ends with a discussion and review of relevant board review questions. Held every other Wednesday morning from 8-9 AM at the Joslin Diabetes Center.
“Diabetes Pearl of the Day” Presentations
These presentations are for the internal medicine residents and will be held every third Tuesday of each month at noon during the months of September through April. The primary inpatient fellow will be assigned to give these 1-2-minute mini lectures. The case will be selected from the list of SI events for the previous month. Presenting benefits, the fellow by allowing them to be involved in reviewing SI events related to insulin dosing and is also part of the ACGME requirement (M&M) for fellowship. The learning point given to medicine residents will hopefully help decrease the number of similar SI events.
Endocrinology, Diabetes, & Metabolism Case Conference
This case conference is presented by fellows and reviews the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of disorders in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism over the course of the year. This conference offers both CME and MOC credits to participants and is attended by our faculty (adult and pediatric endocrinologists), fellows and APPs. This conference is held every Thursday from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the Joslin Diabetes Center Pediatric Conference Room. The cases discussed each week follow the schedule below:
1st Thursday of the Month – Thyroid Conference
2nd Thursday of the Month – Endocrine/Pediatric Conference
3rd Thursday of the Month – Calcium/Bone Conference
4th Thursday of the Month - Diabetes/Metabolism Conference
5th Thursday of the Month – Adrenal/Pituitary Conference
Fellows will each present one Journal Club and give updates on their research projects throughout the academic year as well.
Pediatric Endocrine Conference
This case conference reviews the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of disorders in pediatric patients. It is held on the fourth Monday of the month from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in the Joslin Diabetes Center Pediatric conference room.
