Your Interview
Applicants considered for an interview will be contacted by the Fellowship Coordinator and invited to Upstate Medical University for an interview with the Program Director and the Nephrology faculty. The Nephrology Fellowship interview process is designed to ensure candidates are a good fit for the Fellowship, its academic requirements, and its social culture.
Nephrology Fellowship Interview Process
We interview starting in Mid-September until mid-November each year.
The interview day for the Nephrology fellowship program conducted via Webex typically follows a structured schedule to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the candidates. Here is an example of an interview day schedule for a nephrology fellowship using Webex:
11 - 11:15 am
The Program Director or Program Coordinator welcomes the candidates and provides an overview of the interview day. At this time, there will be an introduction to faculty members as well as fellow candidates. There will be a brief explanation of the virtual interview process and its logistics.
11:15 am - 12 pm
The Program Director will deliver a presentation highlighting the key features, goals, and curriculum of the Nephrology fellowship program. This overview will also include the institution's resources, research opportunities, and clinical experiences. There will be a discussion of the unique aspects and strengths of the program included as well.
12 - 3:30 pm
Candidate interviews will take place in half-hour increments, each of which provides each candidate one-on-one time with a faculty member. During this interview, the faculty member will evaluate the candidate's knowledge, clinical skills, research interests, and commitment to the field of nephrology. This interview also serves as a great opportunity to ask any questions they may have about the fellowship program as a whole.
3:30 - 4 pm
This meeting will involve a pre-recorded virtual tour of the nephrology department and related facilities, as well as a showcase of the available resources, equipment, and infrastructure. At this time, we will also introduce the hospital and clinical settings where fellows will receive training.
4 pm
The Program Director and Program Coordinator will deliver closing remarks, summarizing the day's events and expressing appreciation for our candidates' participation. We will provide an overview of the next steps in the selection process and timeline for final decisions, as well as confirm any additional steps or requirements for the candidates.
Note: This schedule is an example and may vary depending on the day, the number of candidates being interviewed, and any additional activities or sessions planned by the program. You may an opportunity to attend one of our academic sessions.
We also offer in-person interviews for our candidates. In-person interviews for the Upstate Nephrology fellowship offer a comprehensive assessment of candidates' qualifications, program compatibility, and potential for success in the field. The following is an overview of the typical activities and structure involved in an onsite interview:
The interview day commences with a warm welcome from the Program Director or a representative of the fellowship program. The Program Coordinator provides an overview of the day's schedule and introduces candidates to faculty members and current fellows.
Candidates engage in one-on-one interviews with various faculty members. These interviews aim to evaluate the candidate's proficiency in nephrology knowledge, clinical skills, research experience, career goals, and dedication to the field.
Candidates participate in a presentation or meeting led by the Program Director or a senior faculty member, offering an in-depth overview of the fellowship program. This includes discussions on the curriculum, research opportunities, clinical rotations, and educational resources available to fellows.
Candidates may join the department's clinical or educational rounds, where current fellows and faculty members present and discuss intriguing cases or research topics. This affords candidates the opportunity to observe the academic environment, interact with current fellows, and gain insights into the program's teaching and learning methodologies.
Candidates are provided with a tour of the hospital or clinical facilities associated with the fellowship program. This allows them to witness firsthand the infrastructure, resources, and cutting-edge technology available for patient care, research, and education.
Throughout the day, candidates have the chance to meet and engage with current fellows, residents, and other faculty members. Informal conversations and networking sessions create an environment conducive to asking questions, gathering information, and assessing the program's culture and community.
An offsite lunch is arranged where candidates can socialize with current fellows in a relaxed setting. This provides an additional opportunity to evaluate the program's dynamics and establish connections with potential mentors and colleagues.
At the conclusion of the day, there is typically a follow-up question-and-answer session with the program director, allowing candidates to address any remaining inquiries or concerns.
