How to Apply
Thank you for your interest in applying to the Rheumatology Fellowship at Upstate Medical University. We understand that you may have many questions about the application and interview process. We are happy to provide you with answers to our most frequently asked questions about the application and interview process below.
Application FAQs
Applications are accepted via Electronic Residency Application Service only. We do not accept paper applications. For more information on how to apply via ERAS, please visit the ERAS website.
We will participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

We will begin reviewing applications in July, on an ongoing basis. We prefer that you send in your applications through ERAS.
- Official medical school transcripts
- Official test transcripts for all applicable examinations (USMLE, LMCC, COMPLEX, NBOME, FMGEMS, FLEX or NBME)
- A curriculum vitae
- Research experience
- Letters of recommendation
- A personal statement
- A valid ECFMG certificate (if you graduated from medical school outside of the United States)
- A copy of your medical school diploma
- Completion of Internal Medicine Residency training prior to the start of the fellowship
- Prior to the start of fellowship to be a Board Eligible status
We will sponsor J1 Visa, Permanent Resident, and EAD. (H1B Visa's will not be sponsored as per institutional policy.)
As per institutional policy, we DO NOT sponsor H1B Visas.
Due to the number of applications that we receive, only those who are chosen for an interview will be contacted.
Interviews will be coordinated directly by Rosa Trpcevski, Fellowship Program Coordinator trpcevsr@upstate.edu at Upstate Medical University. Applicants considered for an interview will be contacted for an interview with the Program Director and selected Rheumatology faculty.
The department of Medicine is now offering observerships.
"All candidates entering residency or fellowship programs at Upstate on or after July 1, 2017, will be subject to pre-employment (post-offer) drug test. This includes any prior Upstate resident/fellow who has had a break in service and is returning to employment. For candidates entering residency or fellowship programs at Upstate, drug screening and final results must be available prior to the first day of their program as a prerequisite to employment."
