Resident Social Life
It is well known that residency training is busy, however we believe that it is very important to balance work with outside activities. In the past, the program arranged and covered the cost of many social outings throughout the year, in addition to social activities that are resident-driven. Resident-Directed Social Events
Residents spend their free time together by organizing picnics, movie nights, snow skiing days at nearby facilities, hiking days, meeting for breakfast, social parties, or perhaps competing in a friendly game of sports, like cricket or basketball. Large groups of residents frequently gather just to spend a day hiking at one of the nearby state parks.
In 2011, the Social Sub-Committees was born! The Social Sub-Committees consists of several house staff that organize events throughout the year. The committee works within a set budget (provided by the Department of Medicine), to offer a variety of events throughout the year that all residents are invited to attend. The Department also sets up events for the house staff throughout the year. You can see the events listed below.
The Program Director, along with the Department of Medicine faculty, welcomes all new residents by hosting a Welcome Reception. This is a cocktail and hors d'oeuvres style reception, and it provides an opportunity for the newly arriving house staff and guests to get to know the faculty members they will be working with.
The Department of Medicine welcomes new residents and their families in the summer, inviting them to a social picnic at a local picnic venue. This provides an opportunity for the newly arriving families to get to know each other.
At the end of the academic year, there is a formal graduation awards ceremony, attended by all residents and guests, as well as faculty and staff. The purpose of this dinner is to say good-bye & best wishes to those graduating from the program and to recognize residents and faculty in the program for various teaching awards.
Residents are often found organizing, assisting, or partaking in various volunteer/charity events throughout the year. Usually this is done in organized groups or teams. It makes the Department of Medicine proud that we have wonderful residents that feel the need to give back to their community.
