About the Department of Medicine
The Department of Medicine at SUNY: Upstate Medical University is an elite combination of a clinical care practice, a teaching facility, and a research institution. In addition to delivering exceptional patient care, many of our providers also serve as university instructors and researchers.
The Department of Medicine is home to hundreds of providers (doctors, advanced practitioners, and trainees) spanning multiple specialties including primary care, hospital medicine, cardiology, dermatology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, infectious disease, nephrology, pulmonary and critical care, sleep medicine, and rheumatology. We care for adult patients both in the hospital as well as in our outpatient practices which can be found throughout Central New York. In addition to our clinical mission, we also participate in research to advance patient-related quality and advance new therapies while also serving as a major site of education for all levels of learners at Upstate Medical University.

Teaching the Next Generation of Doctors
Many of our medical providers also hold academic posts at Upstate Medical University’s College of Medicine, which has a long and rich history of scholastic excellence. Department of Medicine providers generously share their medical knowledge and proficiencies with medical students, helping teach, motivate, and otherwise prepare them for the practice of medicine. This helps ensure the next generation of physicians can also masterfully balance the foundations of good medicine, including practical preventive care, precise diagnostic assessment, and evaluation of appropriate treatment options.

The Department of Medicine has made highly significant contributions to biomedical research. The focus of this research is on a wide variety of human disease and ailments, both common and rare. Our emphasis on and participation in clinical trials and other studies allows our providers to continue to deliver outstanding, compassionate care driven by the latest discoveries in medicine.
