Inpatient Schedules

The inpatient service is covered by one fellow at a time, with a Jeopardy fellow for backup. The fellow works closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes the attending, residents, and our inpatient glycemic team consisting of nurse practitioners, diabetes educators, and a pharmacist. During their inpatient week, fellows will not have outpatient clinics scheduled. The Jeopardy fellow will have half day outpatient clinics scheduled in the morning only.

Outpatient Clinic Schedules

The outpatient rotation consists of 4-5 half-day clinics per week supervised by an attending preceptor at the Joslin Diabetes Center. In each of these clinics, fellows will treat a variety of endocrine disorders including diabetes, adrenal diseases, pituitary diseases, thyroid diseases, osteoporosis, and metabolic bone diseases.

Electives

Endocrinologists must be able to work in a multidisciplinary system of primary care and specialist providers who contribute to the care of patients with endocrine disorders. The objective of the subspecialty electives is to provide additional education and first-hand exposure to relevant services of other specialties (ophthalmology, nuclear medicine, podiatry) or to provide supplementary experience in areas that are not a major focus of our faculty (reproductive endocrinology, pediatric endocrinology, gynecologic and obstetric care of women with endocrine disorders). During the second year of fellowship, each fellow will be assigned an elective block during the months of October, November, and January. During the second half of the year, a fellow could spend additional time in any of the specialties.

During the months of April and May of their second year, fellows will be scheduled to attend a pump training session with an educator (approximately 3 hours). A separate session with an educator will be scheduled for the fellows to learn how to use a CGM and be given an opportunity to wear one.

First year fellows will be scheduled for time with educators and dietitians at the Joslin during their outpatient shadowing week in July.

Research/Scholarly Activities

In the first year, fellows will begin the process of looking for a project. The expectation is to identify a research project and mentor by January of that year. In the second year, fellows will meet monthly with their research mentor to discuss the progress of their research. The expectation is to prepare a poster to present at a regional or national meeting and to ultimately publish their results. Fellows who have posters accepted to a regional or national meeting will present their project at a Friday conference prior to the meeting. Fellows will also give update presentations on their research/scholarly activity three times throughout the year (October, February, and May) during an assigned Thursday noon conference.
