Program Overview
Upstate Medical University tailors the program of each Fellow to his or her specific interests and needs while fulfilling the requirements of the subspecialty Board of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.
The Program
The primary ambulatory experience is at the Joslin Diabetes Center, University Endocrinologists, and Osteoporosis Center, with additional experience at the VA Medical Center Diabetes and Endocrine Clinics. Inpatient consultations are primarily performed at University Hospital and the VA Medical Center in Syracuse. There are, on average, four formal teaching conferences weekly.
The Joslin Diabetes Center
The Joslin Diabetes Center provides comprehensive services and includes adult and pediatric endocrinologists, preventive cardiologists, nurse educators, dietitians, psychologists, podiatrists, exercise physiologists large insulin pumps, CGMS and telemedicine programs. The Joslin Center/University Endocrinologists evaluates individuals for all endocrine conditions. At the Center are 2 thyroid ultrasound machines for FNAs, a DEXA machine and equipment for measurement of ABIs. The Thyroid Center/Thyroid Cancer Program at Joslin collaborates closely with Nuclear Medicine, Pathology, and Surgery; the Pituitary Center with Neurosurgery, Radiology, and Pathology, and the Metabolic Bone Disease Center with Nuclear Medicine, Nutrition, Radiology, and Pathology.
Research Facilities
Excellent clinical and laboratory research facilities are available. Each fellow is expected to engage in a research project, which may be predominantly laboratory or clinical, depending upon the interests of the fellow.
