As a newcomer in Syracuse, NY, you can find a wealth of resources at your disposal through Upstate Medical University. From general guidance to airport pick up services, the University is set to make your transition smooth and comfortable.

Big Brother/Big Sister Program

A few years ago, the Department of Medicine developed this program to better assist incoming residents in transitioning into their residency programs. There is no one better to answer your questions or offer you advice than someone who has been through the process.

Each incoming resident is assigned to a current resident in our program. They will be responsible for assisting you with any questions you may have, providing you with advice and pertinent information, and welcoming you to the program.

We encourage both you and your Big Brother/Big Sister out to each other and open the lines of communication early on. If you do not hear from your assigned person within a week of receiving the assignment list, please feel free to contact them. If it is determined that the resident assigned to you is unavailable, the Chief Resident will assign an alternate Big Brother/Big Sister, inform you of the change, and have them follow up with you.

Airport Pick Up

In an effort to make your move to Syracuse as pleasant as possible, we encourage you to take advantage of the option to be picked by a friendly face upon arrival. For the last few years, residents and faculty have offered to provide incoming residents with rides from the airport. We feel it is much nicer to be greeted by someone familiar with the area than to arrive in Syracuse after traveling, only to have to locate a taxi to drive you to your new home.
