Nephrology

The nephrologists at the Department of Medicine at SUNY: Upstate Medical University are experts in diseases affecting the kidneys, as well as hypertension. They provide care to adult patients with chronic renal failure through top-of-the-line, comprehensive dialysis programs.

We provide medical direction to a regional kidney transplant program and provide complete support of patients with end-stage renal disease, including intermittent hemodialysis, CAPD, CCPD, and CRRT.

We also care for patients with complex kidney stone problems and serve patients from more than two dozen counties in upstate New York. All patients should be referred by their physician.

There are more than 1,500 acute dialysis treatments performed at University Hospital alone and nearly 250 chronic end-stage renal disease patients are cared for at the nearby University Dialysis Center and our satellite units in Auburn and Oswego.

Transplant Clinic

Our kidney transplant program is dedicated to providing advanced solid organ transplant services to patients in the central New York region, which includes 36 counties and a population of about 1 million. Approximately 35 renal transplants per year are performed at University Hospital, and more than 1,500 transplant-related patients are followed in an outpatient setting. In addition, the program provides specialty care and immunosuppressive monitoring to recipients of other solid organ transplants, such as the small intestine, liver, heart, and lung.

Our providers work with medical and surgical house staff, renal fellows, pharmacy, and other healthcare professionals. Systematic research within the program often results in abstracts and presentations that are highlighted at national meetings such as the AST, ASN, and NKF. Our work also includes an advanced quality improvement program and regularly scheduled donor advocacy meetings, transplant listing chart review meetings, and other multidisciplinary activities that augment the clinical care of patients.

Dr. Sriram Narsipur serves as the director of transplant nephrology and is assisted by Dr. John Leggat as the primary medical support for transplantation.

Renal Clinic

We see new patients within 2 weeks of referral and actively collaborate with the patient's primary care provider to optimize their renal care. Our renal program specializes in helping patients manage conditions affecting the kidneys, including:

  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Hereditary kidney disease
  • Metabolic kidney disease, including diabetes and kidney stone disease
  • Difficult-to-manage hypertension
  • Renal transplantation
  • Electrolyte abnormalities and acidosis

Dr. William Clay Elliott is the medical director at the UHCC Medical Specialties Clinic.

Dialysis Clinic

The University Dialysis Center’s dialysis clinic is part of a national 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee. Chronic outpatient, in-center hemodialysis, home hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis services are provided via our clinics located in Syracuse, Auburn and Oswego, New York. There are currently 30 chronic in-center stations in the Syracuse clinic and thirteen chronic stations in the Auburn and Oswego clinic are available. Presently patients dialyze on two shifts Monday to Saturday in the Auburn and Oswego clinics. Syracuse operates two shifts on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and three shifts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Dr. Sriram Narsipur serves as the medical director for the clinic, and Dawn Berry is the administrator.

Kidney Stone Clinic

Our kidney stone clinic offers a comprehensive evaluation of stone-forming risk factors in patients with either a history of recurrent nephrolithiasis or a previous exotic/unusual kidney stone. We currently serve referred patients from northern Pennsylvania to the Canadian border.
